Micheal Whelan and Sun Xun

 Michael Whelan

Michael Whelan’s artwork consists mostly of fantasy, sci-fi, and horror. Whelan mostly uses acrylic and oil paints to create his work but has done some digital art. He has many commissioned works Like his piece Back to Hell was created for Meatloaf’s comeback album, Bat out of Hell.  Whelan wants his artwork to create a feeling of wonder. His commissioned illustration is focused on the elements of the book or album while his non-commissioned works are more about personal things. All his artwork rather commissioned or not have a mystic and dreamlike feeling to them. In his personal work The End of Nature, one might get the feeling of surrealism. I like this series in particular because of how the humans interact with nature in the paintings. Whelan drawing a realistic style, but the content makes it feel like it came out of a dream. Michael Whelan describes his work as “Imaginative realism.” I was drawn to his works because of the content. I loved the way he combines realism with fantasy. I also liked that most of his work was horror, sci-fi, or fantasy themed.

Sun Xun

Sun Xun is Chinese artist mostly known for his animated videos. His work is mostly monochromatic drawings. He uses different types of mediums but mostly seems to use ink and watercolor. Many of the subjects in his works are animals or insects. In his works, Xun deals with many subjects like politics, culture, and memory. I like his artworks because of his use of inks and color in some of them. Sometimes color is used too much but, in his work, it is usually black and white sometimes along with another color. They way he uses different types of materials in one piece makes his work more interesting. .

  1. Sun Xun's work is really fascinating. I really love the monochromatic aspect of his art; I've personally just broken into color myself, but keeping to just black and white will always be near and dear to my heart. I also really like the contrast between more traditional Chinese art and modern ideas, I think that his use of ink/watercolor helps the two styles say coherent despite being so very different. The pieces you chose to display Xun's work is really intriguing, the way he displays his work is really nice - it's just neat and clean and still visually interesting.

    Thanks for sharing!
