Anna Lea Hucht & Alan Reid

Anna Lea Hucht
The artist that I chose was Anna Lea Hucht. Anna Lea Hucht is a contemporary artist whose work primarily consists of drawings and watercolors. She was born in Bonn, Germany in 1980 and currently lives in Berlin. She went to the Academy of Fine Arts, Karlsruhe, class of Gross in Germany and graduated in 2005. From 2005 to 2006, she was a master student at Erwin Gross. The piece I chose to analyze is, "Untitled," 2007, watercolor on paper, 55 x 57 cm. The drawing depicts a woman laying down on her bed in a messy bedroom with items scattered all over the floor. This drawing drew me in because of the composition of the piece, the value, and depth created. The value of the piece seems to be within the mid-tone range with accents of bright white for the light pouring through the window and the dark blacks for the shadows of certain objects in the frame. Through the use of value, depth is created, making the piece feel quite realistic. I enjoy her artwork because a lot of it seems very realistic, yet not quite. This is similar to my style of drawing as well.

Alan Reid
The second artist I chose was Alan Reid. He is a contemporary artist who was born in 1976 in Fort Worth, Texas and currently lives in New York City. He primarily makes drawings in colored pencil and mixed media with a light color palette. In an article published by Artspace, they say, "Often, he composes his figures with a disregard for the forces of gravity, or he floats cut-out, foam-core objects on the picture plane as if they were boats on a pond. The women who feature in his drawings are all slim and strong; one can imagine them gliding effortlessly through a room." The models he depicts, then are not meant to be frail and a lack of seriousness. They are meant to be strong, powerful women. The piece I chose to analyze is titled, "Fancy Dancer." It depicts a woman's portrait in the center of the page and a drawing of a man and woman near the bottom of the page with what appears to be houses underneath the middle center woman and a bird off to the left. The composition of this piece, as well as the colors and mixed media aspect, drew me into this work. The colors used in the piece creates an almost dreamlike feel to the work and in many of his other works as well, yet there is a sense of strength and power in the women depicted in these works. I admire his work because it uses many different mediums and that is what I want to experiment with more in my work.
